Åland and Gasgrid vetyverkot Oy signed a letter of intent to explore building a hydrogen network on Åland. The project will map potential production and consumption sites, and define a timeline for a hydrogen economy. The Åland Government plans to use EU REPower funds.
India Cancels Tungsten Auction to Protect Biodiversity

India's Ministry of Mines annulled the auction of the Nayakkarpatti Tungsten mineral block due to its inclusion of the Arittapatti Biodiversity Heritage Site and other cultural heritage sites. This decision followed a meeting with traditional community leaders and reflects the government's commitment to biodiversity protection and traditional rights.
Australia boosts CEFC green bank with $2 billion

The Australian Government has allocated an additional AUD$2 billion in capital to the CEFC, increasing its investment capacity to AUD$32.5 billion. This will support investments in renewable energy generation and storage, contributing to Australia’s clean energy transition and emissions reduction goals. The CEFC has committed $1.1 billion in investments in the six months to December 2024, leveraging $4.85 for each dollar committed.
Brazil Launches Accelerated Energy Transition Program (Paten)

U.S. DFC approves $3 Billion for climate and sustainable projects

The U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), approved 22 transactions totaling nearly $3 billion in Q1 of FY2025. Several transactions focused on climate adaptation and mitigation, including a $1 billion debt conversion in Ecuador supporting the Amazon Biocorridor Program for biodiversity conservation and climate resilience, and a $15 million loan to the Lendable Decarbonization Fund for companies in energy, transportation, and agriculture. Additionally, approximately $500,000 in technical assistance funding was approved for a reforestation project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Japan keen to promote Green Iron & Steel

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has established a Green Iron Research Committee for GX Promotion to promote the use of green iron. The committee's findings from a recent meeting emphasize promoting GX value understanding, international standard reflection, expanding low CFP (carbon footprint) use in steel, supporting demand and supply sides through government procurement, incentives, and technological development. The steel industry accounts for about 10% of Japan's greenhouse gas emissions.

Australia Trials Renewable Diesel in Fishing Trawlers
(January 23)
The NSW Government, in collaboration with the Decarbonisation Innovation Hub, launched the $920,000 Beyond Fossil Diesel Program. The program trialled renewable diesel in three fishing trawlers, achieving a 70-90% reduction in emissions. More than 6,000 liters of renewable diesel were blended with fossil diesel. The aim is to inspire confidence and drive adoption of renewable fuels in the marine sector.

Manitoba AgriInsurance Program Announces Lower Premiums for 2025

Canada and Manitoba have announced details of the 2025 AgriInsurance program, administered by Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC). Manitoba farmers will benefit from lower premium rates for most insurable crops in 2025; the average premium will be $13.01 per acre compared to $15.43 per acre in 2024. Total coverage for 2025 is expected to be $4.2 billion. The program is being enhanced by adding birdsfoot trefoil as an eligible crop and increasing the maximum value for livestock predation claims from $3,000 to $7,000 per animal. Support for the program is provided under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

Bahamas Invests in Electricity Reform for Sustainable Growth

The Bahamas is partnering with the private sector to modernize its electricity grid and increase renewable energy (solar) to 30 percent by 2030, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and boosting national output. The IMF's Renewable Energy Balance of Payments tool estimates this could increase long-run growth potential from 1.5 percent to 2 percent. Climate change risks, including rising sea levels, threaten to reduce national output by up to 11 percent by 2100. Investing in climate resilience could increase output by up to 9 percent.

EDB and Qazaq Green Partner to Develop Kazakhstan’s Renewable Energy

Kazakhstan: The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) and Qazaq Green signed a Memorandum of Cooperation to boost renewable energy development. EDB has invested in over 300 MW of solar and 250 MW of wind power in Kazakhstan. This collaboration aims to increase renewable energy's share in Kazakhstan’s energy mix and promote clean energy trade across Eurasia.
South Africa regrets US withdrawal from Paris Agreement

South Africa expressed profound regret over the United States' withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. The US played an important role in negotiating the agreement, and its withdrawal is seen as damaging to multilateralism and international law. South Africa urged the US administration to take its commitments seriously and consider the ramifications of its withdrawal. South Africa remains committed to the goals of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.
