Taiwan Expands Carbon Reduction Reporting Plan
(January 12)
Taiwan's Ministry of Environment (MOENV) unveiled an expanded carbon reduction reporting plan that includes various sectors consuming high levels of energy. Businesses emitting over 10,000 metric tons of CO2e annually or with single branches emitting over 5,000 MtCO2e must report greenhouse gas emissions starting in 2026. Carbon fees will be levied in 2026 on entities emitting more than 25,000 MtCO2e a year, affecting 281 enterprises.

UK Awards Program Includes Low Carbon Energy Category
(January 13)
The UK’s Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) has added a new category, Low Carbon Energy, to its Made in the UK, Sold to the World Awards for SMEs. Two winners from last year’s awards, Intralink and SimVenture, reported revenue growth and market expansion.
Uniper explores carbon capture power plant in UK Humber region
(January 09)
UK-based Uniper is exploring the development of a new carbon capture power station in the Humber region. The Killingholme Low Carbon Power project involves developing a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power station and installing carbon capture technology to remove CO2 emissions. The project aims to be operational by 2030, with a capacity of at least 470MW.
India's 7.93% GHG Emission Drop and Climate Action
(January 12)
India reported a 7.93% reduction in GHG emissions in 2020 compared to 2019, as highlighted in its 4th Biennial Update Report (BUR-4). The energy sector contributed 75.66% of emissions. India aims for net-zero emissions by 2070 and has launched several initiatives including the "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" tree plantation campaign and the Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats & Tangible Incomes (MISHTI) Program, with ₹12.55 crores allocated in FY 2024-25.
Taiwan promotes sustainable forestry in railway construction
(January 10)
Taiwan's Railway Bureau and the Forestry Bureau signed a memorandum of understanding to promote sustainable forestry and construct low-carbon railway stations. The 79.53 billion NTD project will use domestic sustainable wood in the renovation of Tanaka Station and future railway stations to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

EU adopts FuelEU Maritime Regulation to decarbonize shipping
(January 10)
The European Union has implemented the FuelEU Maritime Regulation, effective January 1, 2025, to decarbonize its maritime sector. This regulation mandates a gradual reduction in greenhouse gas intensity, starting at -2% in 2025 and reaching -80% by 2050 compared to 2020 levels. The EU has also committed EUR 20 million in EU Allowances and EUR 530 million through Horizon Europe for research and innovation in renewable and low-carbon fuels for the maritime sector.
Taiwan Celebrates Wetland Day, Highlighting Climate Change Mitigation
(January 11)
Taiwan's Ministry of the Interior (MOI) National Parks Administration held a "2025 Wetland Day" event in Kaohsiung, highlighting the importance of wetlands in carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. The event included awards for wetland conservation efforts and promoted public awareness of wetland conservation.
Executive Yuan (Taiwan Cabinet)
Zambia: Strengthening Community Forestry for Emissions Reduction
(January 09)
Zambia's Ministry of Green Economy and Environment, supported by the World Bank, is implementing the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP) to generate payments for emission reductions and distribute them according to a Benefit Sharing Plan. A key component involves strengthening community forestry management, aiming to enhance the management capacity of existing CFMGs and establish new ones.
Financial Risks of Canada's Carbon Capture Project
(January 09)
The IEEFA report highlights financial risks of carbon capture and storage (CCS) in Canada, specifically the Pathways Project in Alberta. The project, aiming to capture CO2 from 13 oil sands facilities, faces cost challenges exceeding potential revenue, threatening financial sustainability and potentially requiring substantial government subsidies. The report indicates that operating costs are growing at twice the rate of CO2 captured volumes, and an oversupply of carbon emission performance credits (EPCs) risks reducing project revenues.
Storing Carbon in Buildings: A Climate Change Solution
(January 09)
Researchers at UC Davis and Stanford University found that building materials like concrete and plastic can store billions of tons of CO2. They calculated that if 10% of the world’s concrete aggregate production were carbonateable, it could absorb a gigaton of CO2. The study suggests that storing CO2 in buildings, combined with decarbonization efforts, could help achieve emission reduction goals. The research was supported by a National Science Foundation grant.
Cloverdale Paint & Celanese Partner for Sustainable Paint Solutions
(January 08)
US-based Cloverdale Paint and Celanese Corporation have partnered to create sustainable paint solutions using Celanese’s carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technology. The collaboration is expected to utilize over 1 million pounds of CO2 emissions annually in Cloverdale Paint's manufacturing.
Sustainable Shipping in Australia: Höegh Autoliners & Svitzer Partnership
(January 07)
Australia: Höegh Autoliners and Svitzer partnered to implement Svitzer’s EcoTow solution, achieving a near 100% reduction in CO2 emissions from towage operations of the Höegh Aurora during its maiden voyage. The EcoTow solution uses carbon credits generated from biofuel use to offset emissions.
Sustainable Packaging from Peatland Plants
(January 02)
German researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV have developed a sustainable packaging solution using peatland plants. The project, supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and other ministries, aims to create bio-based packaging for the non-food sector, reducing reliance on wood and minimizing carbon emissions.
UAE conducts climate change impact study on Arabian Gulf
(January 12)
The Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD) and Khalifa University collaborated on a comprehensive coastal seabed survey aboard the marine research vessel Jaywun to explore the effects of climate change on the Arabian Gulf’s marine ecosystem. The research, launched by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will inform future sustainability and conservation projects.
